I-66 work zones to watch for this week

Work continues on the effort to bring toll lanes to Interstate 66 between Haymarket and the Capital Beltway.

As weather conditions allow, crews will continue corridor-wide roadway maintenance and address issues as needed, with daily multi-lane closures during daytime and overnight hours on Interstate  66 east and east, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.

Additional activities include:

  • Constructing bridge foundations at I-495, Route 28, and Route 234 Business interchanges and the Bull Run Drive overpass
  • Constructing retaining walls along I-66
  • Clearing trees and brush, grading, and drainage installation throughout the corridor
  • Shifting traffic patterns at Route 123 North ramp to I-66 West
  • Paving temporary roadway for upcoming traffic pattern shifts at Route 123 interchange
  • Grading and drainage installation at the future Gainesville/University Boulevard Park and Ride Lot and Manassas/Balls Ford Road Park and Ride Lot
  • Grading and excavating for the new E.C. Lawrence Park Access Road and temporary realignment of Braddock Road
  • Relocating underground and overhead utilities along I-66 and Route 28

Here are some upcoming work zones to watch out for this week:

ROUTE 286 (FAIRFAX COUNTY PARKWAY)
I-66 East from Route 286 to Route 50
Thursday, April 18: 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Friday, April 19: 9 p.m. to 9 a.m.
Three lanes will be closed to implement long-term lane shifts for construction. Drivers should expect occasional 20-minute stoppages and slowdowns along eastbound I-66.

ROUTE 50 / FAIRFAX
Waples Mill Road North from Route 50 to Valley Road
Monday, April 15: 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Single-lane closures on northbound Waples Mill Road to implement long-term lane shifts for construction. Drivers should expect occasional 20-minute stoppages and slowdowns.

I-66 East from Route 286 to Route 50
Thursday, April 18: 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Friday, April 19: 9 p.m. to 9 a.m.
Three lanes will be closed to implement long-term lane shifts for construction. Drivers should expect occasional 20-minute stoppages and slowdowns along eastbound I-66.

ROUTE 123 (CHAIN BRIDGE ROAD) / OAKTON – CITY OF FAIRFAX
Route 123 South from White Granite Drive to I-66
Tuesday, April 16: 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
The left lane will be closed to implement long-term lane shifts for construction. Drivers should expect occasional 20-minute stoppages and slowdowns along southbound Route 123.

Route 123 North from Eaton Place to White Granite Drive
Wednesday, April 17: 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
The left lane will be closed to implement long-term lane shifts, and open new turn lanes to implement a new traffic pattern for construction of the new interchange. Drivers should expect occasional 20-minute stoppages and slowdowns along northbound Route 123.

After midnight, the ramp from Route 123 North to I-66 West will be closed. Drivers will access I-66 West by turning left at a temporary traffic signal using the two new left-turn-only lanes onto a new roadway which joins the existing ramp from southbound Route 123 to I-66 West.
