WOODBRIDGE — Prince William County Executive Christopher Martino doesn’t appear to be impressed with the new ideas for redeveloping Pfitzner Stadium.
Martino on Tuesday told the county Board of Supervisors that the results of a request for information (RFI) on what to build at the 65-acre stadium site once the Potomac Nationals Minor League Baseball team closes up shop and heads to Fredericksburg were “less than impressive.”
As we reported earlier this month, multiple companies responded to the county’s call for ideas, that went out late last year, on what to build on what it calls “Government Center Park”. Many of the ideas that came back involved some sort of sports complex, surrounded by a mix of homes and retail spaces.
Based upon his disappointment with the current round of RFI’s, Martino told the Board he will direct staff to issue another call for competing proposals in the area. Most of the proposals call for the construction of some sort of sports facility for youth.
“We’ve spent so much money improving our outdoor facilities, but we really need to indoor facilities,” said Prince William County Board of Supervisors Chairman Corey Stewart. “These requests are coming in from all areas.”
Stafford County has solicited for vendors to come and run what would be an indoor field house for gymnastics and soccer in a public-private partnership with the county. Because Prince William’s population is larger than Stafford’s, Stewart says the market would support such a facility in Prince William.
The county owns the Richard G. Pfitzner Stadium that sits behind its government center on Prince William Parkway. It’s been home to the Potomac Nationals since 1984, but the team announced it would move to Fredericksburg by 2020 after efforts for a new stadium deal in Woodbridge failed.
The land on which the county wants to develop is located seven miles from Interstate 95, 26 miles from Dulles Airport, and 28 miles from Regan National Airport, according to the county’s RFI documents.
There are 523,876 people living within a 10-mile radius of the land, all with an average household income of $113,000.
