New urgent care in Woodbridge promises speedy medical care, plans to expand

WOODBRIDGE — A new Urgent Care center has opened in Woodbridge, aiming to provide swift medical care through its partnership with Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center.

Located at the intersection of Park Lake Road and Prince William Parkway, one mile west of Old Bridge Road, the center is a joint venture between Practice Velocity and Sentara Healthcare. Another Velocity Urgent Care center is slated to open in the nearby in Port Potomac neighborhood in early 2019.

“With us, you can have your medical needs met quickly and get on with your day; that’s our differentiator,” said Alan Ayers, CEO of Velocity Urgent Care. Patients are typically getting in and out of the new center within 30 minutes.

Timing is an issue frequently raised by patients in the area. The average Emergency Room (ER) visit at Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center in Woodbridge can range from one to five hours, according to ER Wait Watcher.

Instead of gambling on a potentially lengthy ER visit, patients with minor medical issues — such as rashes, sore throats, coughs, or earaches — can get quick results at Velocity Urgent Care.

In addition to their speed, Velocity Urgent Care also differentiates itself by their close relationship with Sentara, which makes transfers and communication with specialists easy.

“We want to be the front door to the community’s health needs and resources,” said Ayers. “If we can’t treat the patient then and there, we can refer them to the appropriate specialist and send them to Sentara,” which is roughly a 15-minute drive from Velocity Urgent Care, down Prince William Parkway.

Woodbridge is a central hub of activity, said Ayers, which is experiencing rapid growth of new homes and businesses. “We see great potential in Woodbridge and we want to provide long-term commitment to the Woodbridge community,” he explained.

Velocity has plans to roll out 20 urgent care centers in Virginia, following the Sentara hospital footprint. “Practice Velocity has experience in opening and developing urgent cares and Sentara has the backing of its nonprofit health system,” said Ayers.

The new Woodbridge center is equipped with state of the art diagnostic tools and skilled personnel, including digital x-ray read by a board-certified radiologist, and an on-site lab that can produce results as soon as the patient gets blood work done.

Most insurance plans are accepted, including Medicare, Medicaid and TRICARE. They also have self-pay “no surprises” pricing, where customers without insurance can see how much their care will cost them before the visit. The typical self-pay patient visit cost is $125.

Patients can walk in without an appointment, or easily reserve a spot online.

A ribbon cutting and open house for the new center will be held Jan. 16, 2019 at 5 p.m.

The Prince William County Board of County Supervisors will address the county’s meals tax during the upcoming budget deliberations, according to Chair At-Large Deshundra Jefferson. The meals tax, enacted in 2022, has been a concern for local restaurant owners, some of whom are advocating for its repeal.

The proposed meal tax (also called the food and beverage tax) for Prince William County in FY2025 is projected to generate $42 million in revenue. This represents a $10 million increase from the previous year, reflecting a significant rise of 31.25%.

The tax has drawn strong reactions from the restaurant industry, where owners have repeatedly called for its abolition, arguing that it places additional strain on their already tight margins. Restaurant owners have pointed to the increased costs they’ve faced over the past few years, compounded by inflation and staffing shortages, making the meals tax particularly burdensome.
