State transportation officials will engage in a massive transportation study that will examine commuter patterns from those traveling from as far away as Caroline County, the Shenandoah Valley, and drivers from Maryland into Virginia.
Gov. Robert F. McDonnell announced the “SuperNova” transit study to identify new centers of employment and development, according to a press release.
The study should take about 12 months to complete.
This latest study comes after officials with the Virginia Department of Transportation put the wraps on a series of design public hearings on the proposed Interstate 95 HOV/HOT lanes.
The project would convert the existing HOV lanes from Dumfries to Esdall Road in Alexandria to toll lanes. The lanes would be extended to Va. 610 in North Stafford, and while vehicles with three or more occupants will be able to use the lanes for free with an electric EZPass transponder inside their car, single drivers would be charged a toll 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Officials are evalaating comments from the series of meetings and construction could begin as early as spring.
