VRE to Run Regular Service Monday

Virginia Railway Express plans to operate on time Monday after canceling service on Friday after floods washed out a portion of track on the Fredericksburg line.

The washed out portion of track was in Franconia and halted service on the line Thursday, forcing VRE to find buses to take riders to stations further down the line.

CSX has been working around the clock since Thursday night on several areas of track that had been damaged by flooding. All tracks are now open; however, several temporary speed restrictions along the route are in effect. Similar to after working on the railroad as part of preventative maintenance, these slow orders will be in place until the track settles. This may take several days. Even so, we expect any delays that we experience to be minimal.

The transit agency also says there was also damage to the system’s Manassas line.

Norfolk Southern has also been working around the clock since Thursday night to repair parts of their tracks that were damaged. There is still a short section of one of the tracks that is out of service. Because of this, our trains will be single tracking between Burke Centre, Rolling Road and Backlick Road on the track furthest from the station. Riders will need to use the pedestrian crossing to access the train. Please remain on the platform until the conductors have indicated that it is safe to cross. While there may be no revenue train traffic, there still may be some work trains in the area.

VRE operates two lines, one from Fredericksburg that serves the Potomac Communities and one that originates from the Manassas area. Both lines combined, the system carries an monthly average of 18,000 passengers.
