White House Historical Association, Scottish stonemason tour Government Island

Officials with the White House Historical Association toured Stafford County's Government Island on Monday, along with Scottish Stonemason Charles Jones who is visiting the U.S. for a symposium, “The United Kingdom and Ireland in the White House: A Conversation on Historical Perspectives.” The tour provided Jones a historical reference to Government Island’s quarry history in supplying stone for the White House.

From a press release:

Aquia sandstone, quarried from Stafford’s Government Island, will be the star of a special symposium at the White House in Washington, D.C., on May 2 as well as the centerpiece of an ongoing exhibit in Scotland. For this event, the White House Historical Association and the Historic Environment Scotland have joined together to create this symposium and exhibit as Scottish stonemasons helped create the original carvings in the White House.
