A shakeup is underway in Stafford County politics. Longtime Falmouth District Supervisor Meg Bohmke announced she will not seek reelection, while School Board Member Maya Guy declared her candidacy for the Aquia District seat on the Board of Supervisors.
During the April 1, 2025, Board of Supervisors meeting, Bohmke, who has served 12 years on the board and four years previously on the school board, said she is stepping away from public office.
“After 12 years on the Board of Supervisors and four years on the school board, I have decided not to seek re-election this November,” Bohmke said. “It has been an honor and a pleasure to serve this great county, and I appreciate the Falmouth voters entrusting me to represent them for 16 years.”
Bohmke, a Republican, also endorsed a potential successor, Mike Cattell, a 22-year Falmouth resident and longtime community leader.
“I am officially endorsing Mike Cattell, who has lived and raised his family in Falmouth for 22 years… I know he will serve the Falmouth District with integrity and vigor,” she said.
Cattell, who has held senior leadership roles in corporate and nonprofit sectors and has served in local volunteer roles, including with the Rotary Club of Stafford and the Boy Scouts of America, expressed gratitude for the endorsement and emphasized his campaign priorities.
“I am humbled to accept Supervisor Bohmke’s endorsement and want to thank her for her many years of service to our community,” Cattell said. “The Falmouth District has many challenges and wonderful opportunities. I am ready to get to work for the people of the Falmouth District on the issues that matter most to them.”
Cattell said his campaign would focus on responsible growth and financial stewardship. “We have all seen the expansive increases in local taxes on our residents are not sustainable,” he said. “I look forward to utilizing my resource development experience and skills to bring fiscal stability to the community.”
Meanwhile, Maya Guy announced her campaign for the Aquia District seat on the Board of Supervisors. Guy was elected to the Stafford County School Board in 2021 and serves her first term. She currently holds the position of Vice Chair. School board members do not campaign on party affiliation.
“Maya Guy, a dedicated community advocate and Stafford County School Board Member, is officially announcing her candidacy for the Stafford County Board of Supervisors – Aquia District in the 2025 election,” her campaign said in a statement.
“As someone deeply invested in our community, I’m running to bring the Aquia District consistent, transparent, and effective leadership while focusing on our growth and infrastructure,” said Guy. “Our families deserve a government that listens, acts, and prioritizes the needs of residents over personal gains.”
As a school board member, Guy has played a key role in implementing SCPS Specialty Centers, establishing Student Representatives on the School Board, and enacting a cell phone-free policy in Stafford County schools.
“I’ve been an advocate for Aquia for almost two decades, and I want to continue to work for our community, ensuring that Stafford remains a great place to live, work, and raise a family,” she said.
Guy’s campaign will officially kick off with a launch event on Friday, April 19, at 3 p.m. in the Aquia District, though a location was not provided. The event will feature guest speaker Senator Jennifer Carroll Foy, a staunch community development and education supporter. Her presence, campaign officials say, highlights the importance of Guy’s candidacy for Stafford’s future.
If current Aquia District Supervisor Monica Gary stays in the race, Guy will face her in a primary challenge. Gary, an independent, previously flip-flopped on her re-election plans earlier this year, initially saying she wouldn’t run again before reversing course and jumping back into the race in February.
