Fredericksburg Public Works staff has been actively preparing for the winter storm, applying nearly 3,000 gallons of brine solution to roads, bridges, and overpasses, with many treated at least twice. Crews have loaded salt and sand onto all available equipment and will patrol their routes starting at 8:00 p.m. Sunday.

Snow plowing will begin as soon as accumulation occurs, with priority given to main roads, including Route 1, Route 3, Fall Hill Avenue, Princess Anne Street, Caroline Street, and Lafayette Boulevard. Secondary streets will be addressed as conditions allow. Residents are urged to stay off the roads Sunday night and Monday to ensure crews and public safety personnel can operate without unnecessary obstacles.

Fredericksburg Regional Transit (FXBGO!) will operate on a 4-hour delay on Monday, January 6, due to inclement weather. Service may be further adjusted based on road conditions. Updates are available on the FXBGO! website or Facebook page.

Additionally, all City Government Offices and courts will be closed on Monday, January 6, due to the storm.

Here’s the full press release:

Winter Storm Blair has shifted, causing the snow and ice line to move further south, which has led to an increase in our forecasted snow totals. We now anticipate total precipitation for this event in the City of Fredericksburg to be between 10 and 12 inches. Additionally, winter weather is beginning to impact the area in Southwest Virginia. Our timeline remains unchanged, with the weather expected to start moving into the area around 7 pm to 8 pm.

The Governor of Virginia has declared a state of emergency in the Commonwealth, and the City of Fredericksburg has declared a local emergency. The City’s Emergency Services and Public Safety teams will be fully staffed throughout this winter emergency. Staff from all City departments have been preparing for this event. We are asking all members of our community to avoid travel if possible. Please remain alert, practice cold weather safety, and check on your neighbors.

The Public Works staff has diligently worked to apply brine-pavement treatments throughout the City. Almost 3,000 gallons of solution was dispersed. Bridges, overpasses, and some of our roads were treated at least twice. Crews have loaded all available equipment with salt/sand and will begin patrolling their assigned routes at 8:00 pm.

Please allow snow removal crews, debris removal crews, and public safety personnel to respond without unnecessary obstacles. Plowing will begin as soon as streets have accumulated snow. Drivers are asked to stay off of the roads Sunday night and Monday. For those who must travel, the City’s Public Works crews will begin clearing roadways at 8 pm this evening and working throughout the night, prioritizing main roads first, which include Route 1, Route 3, Fall Hill Avenue, Princess Anne Street, Caroline Street, and Lafayette Boulevard. They will move to secondary streets as conditions allow.

On Monday, January 6th, Fredericksburg Regional Transit (FXBGO!) will operate on a 4-hour delay due to inclement weather. If the road conditions deteriorate, service may be further adjusted or discontinued. For more information, please go to the FXBGO! website<https://www.fredericksburgva.gov/1687/About-Us> or follow @FXBGO on Facebook<https://www.facebook.com/ridefxbgo>.

The Prince William Board of County Supervisors has approved an additional $472,000 in federal funding to advance the Ellicott Street Sidewalk Project, a critical initiative to improve pedestrian safety and accessibility in Occoquan. The funding comes through the Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Improvement Program, bringing the project closer to completion.

The project, which has evolved since its inception, will construct 675 feet of sidewalk along Ellicott Street, connecting Mill Street to Poplar Alley and extending toward Union Street. It also includes Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) ramps and crossings to address accessibility concerns. The initiative aims to create a safer, more pedestrian-friendly connection between the town’s historic and business districts and the planned Occoquan Greenway trail.

“The Ellicott Street Sidewalk Project is one of several pedestrian improvement efforts we’ve pursued over the years,” said Occoquan Mayor Earnie Porta. “This specific project will create a safer, more contiguous connection to Mill Street and the town’s historic and business district.”

The CRRL serves residents in Fredericksburg, Stafford, Spotsylvania, and Westmoreland counties, offering various services beyond traditional book lending. The library system provides access to technology, community events, educational programs, and resources like homework help, job search tools, and genealogical research. Its facilities include multiple branches, mobile libraries, and digital collections that can be accessed online.

Stafford County Public Schools announced that Nevaeh Lewis of Colonial Forge High School and Emma Siegmund of Rodney Thompson Middle School have been selected for prestigious roles in Virginia’s legislative programs. Lewis will serve as a House of Delegates Page, while Siegmund has been chosen as a Senate Page. These appointments provide hands-on opportunities to learn about government and leadership during the upcoming General Assembly session in Richmond beginning January 8.

Superintendent Dr. Daniel W. Smith praised the students, stating that these roles will help develop leadership skills and inspire civic engagement. Both programs include working with legislators, participating in committee meetings, and engaging in civics and leadership education. Pages will also take part in mock legislative sessions and community service projects.

Siegmund, a high-achieving middle schooler with a 4.0+ GPA, is active in Model United Nations, the National Junior Honors Society, and other academic programs and is the daughter of county school board chair Maureen Siegmund.
