Since the city cannot envelop portions of Prince William County to grow its tax base, it says it needs more financial support from the state.
The Manassas City Council on Monday, November 8, unanimously approved a list of legislative priorities it will present to elected leaders in Richmond. A decades-old law the prevents cities from annexing more land and a subsequent promise from the state to compensate municipalities to offset the cash they would lose by not growing its tax base has not kept up with demand.
Funding for the city's police department is suffering, and the council wants legislators to make it up. This year, the city scaled back about a half-million dollars to its police compared to the previous year, cutting a portion of funding for its animal control division.
