More homes near VRE needed as passenger rail service set to swell, planners say

There's a new push to build new, urbanized, walkabout communities around Virginia Railway Express stations.

For years, we've seen this type of development pop up around Metro stations in Arlington and Fairfax counties, bringing new homes, restaurants, retail, and white-collar jobs.

VRE is the state's only commuter rail system powered by diesel locomotives that operate more slowly than the electric subway cars of Washington's Metro trains. Despite a fully-funded $4 billion, "once in a generation" expansion of passenger and commuter rail service in Virginia, it's unclear if VRE will ever elevate neighborhoods in the Virginia exurbs like Metro did for communities closer to Washington D.C.
