Protest day, comment restriction topics on tap for Wednesday School Board agenda

Prince William County aims to amend its school attendance policy to allow students to have an excused absence if they attend a protest or civic event.

The new policy reflects changes mandated by the General Assembly, which allows middle and high school students an excused absence when participating in a civic or protest day.

  • A new state law took effect July 1, allowing students one excused absence to attend a protest.
  • The practice began in Fairfax County Public Schools, and bills championed by Senator Jennifer McLellan (D-Richmond) and Delegate Sam Rasoul (D-Roanoke) led to Virginia becoming the first state in the union to pass such a law.
  • Manassas public schools approved similar changes to its attendance policy earlier this month.
