Prince William County aims to amend its school attendance policy to allow students to have an excused absence if they attend a protest or civic event.
The new policy reflects changes mandated by the General Assembly, which allows middle and high school students an excused absence when participating in a civic or protest day.
- A new state law took effect July 1, allowing students one excused absence to attend a protest.
- The practice began in Fairfax County Public Schools, and bills championed by Senator Jennifer McLellan (D-Richmond) and Delegate Sam Rasoul (D-Roanoke) led to Virginia becoming the first state in the union to pass such a law.
- Manassas public schools approved similar changes to its attendance policy earlier this month.
