Ridership on Virginia Railway Express, the state's only commuter railroad, continues to be in the ditch when compared to pre-pandemic levels.
According to CEO Rich Dalton, in July, the commuter rail service -- which costs $96 million a year to operate -- carried an average of about 2,600 riders per day. That's compared to 20,000 average daily riders during the same time in 2019 -- an 87 percent drop.
VRE saw a total of 54,400 riders in July and 49,400 riders in June. In June 2019, VRE carried 400,600 riders and 418,400 riders in July of that same year.
