Parents slam Prince William County schools equity policy, call it racist

Parents slammed the Prince William County School Board for its approval of a new equity statement that overhauling the content, and the methods of how children are taught, addressing disparities between the schools in the division, and hiring new teachers based on race.

The statement calls for teachers and school personnel to identify their implicit biases -- an assertion that people base decisions on both past experiences, and racial bias. Last fall during a joint meeting with the School Board, three Prince William County Supervisors walked out of a joint implicit bias training in protest, linking the training to critical race theory, a practice banned from the federal workplace under the Trump administration.

"I think [the statement] is a nice way of segueing into having critical race theory taught to our children. One of my concerns with this term is we will use terms like white privilege and systemic racism. My concern with these terms that I have worked hard to teach my children that the privileges that they have are built off hard work and character. We teach our kids that they're going to be held back in life because of the color of their skin is detrimental."
