Local leaders react to planned ‘stop the steal’ movement for Jan. 6

Thousands are expected to gather in Washington on Wednesday as Congress is expected to certify the results of the Electoral College, whose electors cast their votes on December 14, 2020, for Joe Biden to be the next U.S. President.

President Donald Trump's supporters, alleging election irregularities in multiple states, have planned multiple rallies on Wednesday at the White House, the U.S. Capitol, and Supreme Court under the banner "Stop the Steal." Trump supporters say instances of found ballots at polling places, improper ballot counting, and poll watchers being prevented from observing the electoral count are evidence of voter fraud.

Texas Senator Ted Cruz (R) and 11 other Senators from states like Tennesee, Oklahoma, Alaska, and Kansas are planning to object to certifying the Electoral College votes, and are calling for an emergency recount of all ballots in the U.S. over the course of 10 days. More than 100 members of the House of Representatives is also planning to object to the votes.
