Tax payment center reopens after county employee contracts coronavirus

Residents may once again come to the Prince William County Government Center to pay their taxes.

An employee contracted the coronavirus on Wednesday, and the tax payments office on the first floor of the government center, known as the McCoart Building, was closed to the public. The remainder of the government center remained open for business.

“The McCoart counter was closed so that proper cleaning protocols could be followed after the confirmed COVID-19 illness of a tax administration employee.  All County employees are required to wear masks while in the workplace and serving the public. Therefore the risk to the public is extremely low.   However, as a precaution, space was thoroughly disinfected,” said Prince William County Director of Finance Michelle Attreed.

In its initial announcement on Wednesday, the county government cited “unforeseen circumstances” as the reason for the tax payment office’s temporary closure. It confirmed the coronavirus case today in an email to PLN.

An average of 225 new coronavirus cases has been reported in Prince William County in the past seven days. The county continues to see a low average hospitalization rate per 100 poeple, as an average of five of the county’s 465,000 residents has been hospitalized over the past seven days for the disease.

At 0.02%, the death rate is even lower, with an average of one reported coronavirus death over the past seven days.

The McCoart Building is located at 1 County Complex Court in Woodbridge.
