Updated: Fire at recycling plant closes Blue and Gray Parkway

A fire at a recycling center has closed a major thoroughfare in Fredericksburg.

Blue and Gray Parkway is closed between the Stafford County line and Lafayette Boulevard and Belman Road due to a massive fire at a recycling plant just off Belman Road.

All traffic is being diverted away from the area, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation, while city fire crews work to douse the blaze.

Update from Fredericksburg fire chief Mike Jones:

The Fredericksburg Fire Department had a fire today at 1123 Summit Street (Summit Recycling Center) in Fredericksburg.

The call came in just before 10 am and units arrived shortly thereafter. First arriving fire units found a fire in a large pile of crushed automobiles that were being processed as scrap metal. The pile was at least 20 ft. tall and 75 ft. wide and 75 ft. Deep.

The fire was involving about half that pile with a large smoke plume. Fire units from Fredericksburg, Stafford, and Spotsylvania Counties worked for the better part of three hours to extinguish the blaze.

A large excavator from the business was also used to help separate the burning vehicles from the pile.

The Blue-Gray Parkway ( VA Rt. 3) was shut down over an hour while hose lines were street from a water source to help quell the flames. No firefighter or civilian injuries or deaths occurred.

Water runoff from the site was evaluated and several containment systems were put in place in Hazel Run (a tributary of the Rappahannock River). No hazardous product reached the river.

Those containment systems will be checked over the next several days and any product found will be mitigated. All units are no back in service.

Around 1,000 feet of fire hose was damaged and will most likely have to be replaced.

Prince William Times: Licensed wildlife rehabber Olivia LoBalbo can’t wait until the wild animals she treats are well enough to scurry off or fly away into the forest on their own. But while they’re in her care, they can now be safely transported in a fully equipped wildlife rescue van, dubbed “The PAW Express,” courtesy of the Prince William SPCA.

LoBalbo, 37, is a former veterinarian tech and the founder of AERO, which stands for Animal Education and Rescue Organization. For the last 10 years, she and her nonprofit have taken in thousands of injured, sick or orphaned wild animals that wouldn’t survive without human intervention. She runs the licensed wildlife rescue and rehabilitation facility out of her Gainesville home.

About 35 in-person residents, plus a handful of others online, turned out Jan. 8 at the Pat White Center at Ben Lomond near Manassas for a thorough, two-hour project update meeting. Coles District Supervisor Yesli Vega also tuned in virtually.

FXBG Advance: The public was first made aware of the possibility of data centers in Celebrate VA when Mayor Devine added the topic to the July 9, 2024 Council agenda, giving the public no prior notice that the topic was to be discussed. Well before that announcement, council members had toured data centers in February, two at a time, to avoid public notice.

Also, prior to the July 9th meeting the City Manager initiated discussion with a developer to provide land for data centers.

In September the City Council supported the expenditure of $200,000 to study the infrastructure needs to provide power for data centers in Celebrate VA. A cost that should not be the responsibility of the city but by either Dominion Power or the developer. When questioned about this City Manager Tim Baroody confirmed it was not the city’s responsibility but explained that it was being done at the direction of the City Council.
