Joyce Rosenberger Slaight

 

Joyce Rosenberger Slaight died May 30, 2020 at the age of 100. Joyce was born on September 26, 1919, in Bucks County, PA, to Chester and Alma Rosenberger. The family moved to Tottenville, Staten Island, NY when Joyce was four years of age.  She was a graduate of Tottenville High School, West Chester State Teachers College (PA) and the Packard Business School (NY, NY). Prior to her marriage, she worked for Staten Island National Bank and for the Richmond County Savings & Loan, Assoc.

 

Joyce married her husband of 55 years, James B. Slaight III (deceased), in 1946, and together they raised three children who survive her, James B Slaight IV (MaryJane), Joyce Slaight Zsembery (Bill), and Joanne D. Slaight. Six grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, and her younger sister, Dorothy Jensen, also survive Joyce. Her brother, Chester Arthur Rosenberger, predeceased her.

 

Joyce was devoted to family, church, community and country. She was a lifelong member of St. Paul’s United Methodist, where she served as a trustee, church treasurer, lay leader, administrative council member, Sunday School teacher, a member of the U.M.W. and in many other capacities. Joyce was active in the PTA of P.S. I. As president of the PTA, Joyce made frequent trips to Albany, NY to lobby for school funding. She was a member of the Huguenot Chapter, Order of the Eastern Start since 1930, Beauvais Hudson Auxiliary of the American Legion since 1984. Joyce and Jim loved to travel together throughout the United States, Canada and Western Europe.

 

Joyce and Jim moved to Westminster at Lake Ridge in 1998 to be closer to their children. While at WLR they continued to enjoy their love of music and spending time with new friends, while also serving on several committees, including the Care Givers Committee, the Resident’s Council and Flying Fingers. Jim passed in 2001. Sunday Chapel was a continuing source of joy and inspiration for Joyce. Joyce’s ashes will be placed in the columbarium at Arlington National Cemetery, with her beloved Jim.

A wildfire outbreak began in California on January 7, 2025 and continues as of Jan., 23. Over 47,000 acres have burned, with a new fire starting yesterday in Hughes County. Over 16,000 structures have burned due to wildfires in 2025.

Katie Brady, county fire department spokeswoman and Fire Life Safety Manager, clarified that “wildfire” is a broad blanket term. Stafford is likelier to experience “brush fires” than quick-moving wildfires that cause widespread destruction like California’s. Brushfires can range in size from a few feet to several acres and can be precursors to a larger wildfire capable of causing significant damage. Brushfires are more common when the area experiences drought conditions, like in 2024.

The disciplinary action taken against Patriot High School Principal Michael Bishop earlier this month is the latest chapter in a turbulent tenure at the school, Insidenova.com reports.

Bishop was placed on involuntary leave, the school announced Jan. 9.

The school division did not provide further details upon request from InsideNoVa because it is a “personnel matter,” said Diana Gulotta, the school system’s director of communications.

Authorities urge public assistance with investigations and provide tips hotlines for each jurisdiction.
