Coronavirus claims life of first Stafford resident as Virginia cases continue to rise

The coronavirus has claimed its first victim in Stafford County on Saturday, April 11, 2020.

Allison Balmes-John from the Rappahannock Area Health District tells us:

I can confirm that the first COVID-19 related death of a resident of Stafford County took place [Satruday] morning.

While RAHD is no longer doing press releases for each new COVID-19 associated death, we do offer our heartfelt condolences to the family during this difficult time.

As we continue to see the tragic impacts of this virus on our community, we continue to urge all residents to take steps to keep our community safe and healthy. This includes staying home as much as possible and frequently washing hands and contact surfaces. When you do have to go out in public, such as work or grocery shopping. please maintain 6 feet of distance between yourself and others and wear a cloth mask to prevent the spread of respiratory droplets.

By all taking these precautions, each of us is doing our part to keep our family, friends, and community safe and healthy.

Stafford County has 72 reported cases of coronavirus as of today. Its neighborhoods in Spotsylvania County and Fredericksburg City have 50 and 12, respectively.

Statewide as of today, there are a total of 5,247 reported cases, and 141 people have died from the disease.

The number of coronavirus cases in the state continues to rise, as Virginia health officials have seen nearly a 100% increase in the number of reported cases in the past week. Governor Ralph Northam has ordered residents to stay at home until June 10.
