Maggie Hansford says yes to park and road bonds

She’s a Democrat who is vying to unseat Jeanine Lawson, who represents the Brentsville District on the Prince William Board of County Supervisors.

The bonds total  $396 million, and if approved by voters on Election Day November 5, would be used to fund projects to improve the county’s road network and recreational facilities.

Hansford says she’s voting “yes because we need additional funding for transportation and family recreation,” she tells Potomac Local.

If voters approve the bond referenda, county leaders don’t have to borrow the entirety of the funds.

  • County officials said they can use borrow a portion of the money and then use it to try to win state and federal matching funds for road projects.
  • Those matching funds probably won’t be there for the park projects, they said, so a full $41 million would need to be borrowed to complete every project on the list.
  • Hansford wouldn’t push to borrow it all.

“No, we should only borrow for critical projects,” said Hansford.

Hansford, like others, said the process in the Prince William Board of County Supervisors selected the final projects for the bond was rushed.

After a public hearing at the Hylton Performing Arts Center, they narrowed down a list of final projects at a June 25 meeting.

“The process was haphazard and rushed, lacking Brentsville’s representation,” said Hansford.

  • Sitting Supervisor Jeanine Lawson was present at the June meeting when the projects were voted on.
