FREDERICKSBURG — Mary Washington Hospital is one of America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Joint Replacement according to a national study by Healthgrades.
Healthgrades is the leading online resource for comprehensive information about physicians and hospitals.
Every year, Healthgrades evaluates hospital performance at almost 4,500 hospitals nationwide for 32 of the most common inpatient procedures and conditions.
They also evaluate hospital performance at tracking outcomes in appendectomy and bariatric surgery using all-payer data provided by 15 states and the District of Columbia.*
The achievement is part of findings released in the Healthgrades 2019 Report to the Nation.
The new report demonstrates how clinical performance differs dramatically between hospitals nationally, regionally, and at the local level, and the impact that this variation has on health outcomes.
Additionally, from 2015 through 2017, patients treated at hospitals receiving the America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Joint Replacement Award have, on average, a 63 percent lower risk of experiencing a complication while in the hospital than if they were treated in hospitals that did not receive the award.
Also, patients treated at hospitals that did not receive the award were 2.71 times more likely to experience a complication in the hospital than if they were treated at hospitals that received the award.*
“Hospitals that have achieved the Healthgrades America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Joint Replacement have proven their dedication to quality care and exceptional outcomes,” said Brad Bowman, MD, Chief Medical Officer at Healthgrades. “Consumers should consider hospital quality when navigating their care journeys, and this recognition distinguishes Mary Washington Hospital in the marketplace.”
“This recognition celebrates the dedication and commitment to excellence demonstrated by the physicians and staff who care for our orthopedic patients every day,” said Mike McDermott, MD, president and CEO of Mary Washington Healthcare. “Given the laser focused-approach of our joint replacement clinical leadership, the quality of care our community receives is second to none in our region and comparable to the top programs around the country.”
Mary Washington Hospital was also recognized for the following clinical achievements:
- Joint Replacement Excellence Award for 3 years in a row (2017-2019)
- Five-Star Recipient for Total Knee Replacement for 3 years in a row (2017-2019)
- Five-Star Recipient for Total Hip Replacement for 4 years in a row (2016-2019)
- Five-Star Recipient for Back Surgery in 2019
For its analysis, Healthgrades evaluated approximately 45 million Medicare inpatient records for almost 4,500 short-term acute care hospitals nationwide to assess hospital performance in 32 common conditions and procedures, and evaluated outcomes in appendectomy and bariatric surgery using all-payer data provided by 15 states and the District of Columbia.
Healthgrades recognizes a hospital’s quality achievements for cohort-specific performance, or the links between risk factors and health outcomes; specialty area performance; and overall clinical quality.
Individual procedure or condition cohorts are designated as 5-star, 3-star, and 1-star categories.
- 5-star: statistically significantly better than expected
- 3-star: not statistically different from expected
- 1-star: statistically significantly worse than expected

(AP) — Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow Sunday and predicted six more weeks of wintry weather, his top-hatted handlers announced to a raucus, record-sized crowd at Gobbler’s Knob in Pennsylvania.
Phil was welcomed with chants of “Phil, Phil, Phil,” and pulled from a hatch on his tree stump shortly after sunrise before a member of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club read from a scroll in which he boasted: “Only I know — you can’t trust A.I.”
At approximately 2:45 P.M. on Saturday, February 1st, units with Stafford County Fire and Rescue (SCFR) responded to a reported structure fire in the 100 block of Aquia Creek Road, near Aquia Creek. Callers reported a neighboring residence on fire, and first arriving units marked the scene less than 10 minutes later and confirmed fire and smoke coming from the rear and roof of a single-family residence.
Due to a lack of hydrants in the area, crews had to utilize rural water operations to shuttle water to the scene. Crews worked quickly to extinguish the fire and bring it under control in approximately an hour, despite the roof collapsing.
The residence was not occupied at the time of the fire, and no injuries were reported. The fire is under routine investigation by the Stafford County Fire Marshal’s Office. SCFR units were assisted on scene by Quantico Fire and Emergency Services.
