Wastewater treatment plant awarded for peak performance

PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY — The H.L. Mooney Advanced Water Reclamation Facility won a Platinum Peak Performance Award from the National Association of Clean Water Agencies (NACWA).

The wastewater treatment plant located in Woodbridge has achieved 100 percent regulatory compliance for the last 10 years.

The Service Authority will be recognized at NACWA’s Utility Leadership Conference on July 18 in Minneapolis.

“We are honored to be recognized by NACWA for the last decade and will continue to focus on the wellbeing of the Chesapeake Bay Watershed,” said Service Authority General Manager Dean Dickey.

The Service Authority’s wastewater treatment process significantly reduces the amount of nitrogen and phosphorus released into Neabsco Creek, which is a tributary of the Potomac River.

An excess of these nutrients can fuel the growth of algae that can lead to low oxygen “dead zones” in the Chesapeake Bay.

“We are immensely proud of our staff, who work diligently to improve and maintain the health of our waterways for current and future generations,” said Service Authority Process Engineer Maureen O’Shaughnessy.
