Drain pipe failure closes Tacketts Mill Road

STAFFORD COUNTY — (Press release) Route 646 (Tacketts Mill Road) in Stafford County is closed to through traffic between Route 612 (Heflin Road) and 645 (Dunbar Road) for motorist safety after a drainage pipe failure.

Residents seeking to access driveways located on Tacketts Mill Road between Dunbar Road and Heflin Road are able to proceed. Access to all residential entrances will be maintained.

Residents can travel as far north on Tacketts Mill Road as Route 1432 (Barrington Woods Boulevard), and residents can travel as far south on Tacketts Mill Road as the final private entrance before Barrington Woods Boulevard.

Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) crews are posting signs this afternoon to guide motorists along the recommended detour route, which is approximately 3.8 miles: 

  • Route 612 (Heflin Road)
  •  Route 627 (Poplar Road)

Tacketts Mill Road will remain closed through the weekend. A reopening date is not immediately available.

An updated schedule to reopen the road will be announced after crews have an opportunity to fully assess damage to the pipe and road. Emergency methods are being used to mobilize a contractor and equipment to support the repair efforts, which will begin on Saturday, March 23.

An average of 1,400 vehicles a day travel on Tacketts Mill Road between Dunbar Road and Heflin Road.
