Prince William leaders approve major Kaiser medical hub in Woodbridge

WOODBRIDGE — Kaiser Permanente got the green light to build a massive new campus in Prince William County.

Occoquan District Supervisor Ruth Anderson reveled after her fellow board members unanimously approved a new “Kaiser South” hub, which will boast a total of 335,000 square feet of office space when complete.

A total of 185 new jobs will come as part of the project. “From an economic perspective, this is going to help with our at-place employment in the county,” said Anderson.

Members of the Lake Ridge-Occoquan-Coles Civic Association said Kaiser Permanente met with their members on multiple occasions and discuss the project.

“We enjoyed working with Kaiser. They’re a great addition to our community,” said Dr. Jack Kooyoomjian.

He urged Anderson to hold a public meeting with homeowners who live nearby the new development so that they can learn about the proposed changes to the neighborhood. Andersson said she would work with LOCCA to organize that meeting.

Tuesday night’s action by the Board of Supervisors rezoned 15-acres of land at the Crossings at Caton Hill complex at Minnieville and Caton Hill roads in Woodbridge, where office space is called for in the county’s comprehensive plan.

Prior to the rezoning vote, a total 305,000 square feet of office space was permitted at the site. The vote increases the allowable amount to Kaiser’s requested amount of 335,000 square feet that is now where the complex will stand at 13285 Minneville Road.

Kaiser plans to build 250,000 square feet of office space at first, and over time will add the final 85,000 square feet. When complete, the new medical complex will house doctors and dentists offices, clinics, laboratories, a pharmacy, eye-care center, and cafeteria.

There’s no word yet on what will happen to an existing Kaiser Permanente office outside the nearby Potomac Mills mall. Kaiser also declined to tell Potomac Local how much it would spend on the project, however, a spokesman did say the new facility would be similar to other large Kaiser facilities in the Washington, D.C. region to include an office in McLean.

For those who want a deeper dive into this story, this post also examines at the effects this project is expected to have on transportation.
