We use music daily as a way to help us focus, relax, or relieve stress throughout the day. You may remember wanting to learn an instrument in school as a child, but in adulthood, picking one up could become an important way to improve both physical and mental health.
If you’re having trouble focusing at work, school, or performing daily tasks, picking up an instrument may help you come up with strategies to remain focused. Instruments require patience and determination to learn, and by staying focused on learning one, you are training your brain.
With technology and social media becoming a major part of everyday life, focusing on playing an instrument may prove to be a challenge, but you will find that with dedication, you can teach yourself to remain how to handle distractions.
One major benefit that comes with learning to play an instrument is the ability to use the skill as a way to relieve stress and anxiety. Research done by Stanford University states that “listening to music seems to be able to change brain functioning to the same extent as medication.” Whether you choose to pick up a guitar or a drum set, after a long day at work or school, you may find it cathartic to pick up your instrument and play your stress away.
At the Manassas Park Community Center, we believe fitness, health, and recreation are more than just exercise, which is why we have developed a set of private instrument lessons to help you improve your music skills and brain health alike. These one-on-one instrument lessons with our instructor include saxophone, clarinet, flute, trumpet, and snare drum. To find out more about how to schedule your lesson, contact Tony Thomas via email at [email protected].

On January 25th, we invite you to experience the magic of Galette des Rois, a 700-year-old tradition celebrated across France throughout the entire month of January (and even beyond!). This sweet, almond-filled puff pastry topped with a golden crown isn’t just a treat—it’s a celebration! The lucky person who finds the fève (a porcelain charm hidden in one of the slices) becomes the King or Queen for the Day, and don’t worry—there will be plenty of royalty to go around! ??
But that’s not all! In France, Les Voeux (New Year’s wishes) continue throughout January, often accompanied by Champagne and good cheer. We’re bringing that festive spirit to you, with a lively evening packed with French food, wine, and music.
