Volunteer tutors in literacy, basic computer skills wanted

  • In celebration of Black History Month, the Center for the Arts will feature the works of James & Zsudayka Nzinga Terrell until March 4th.  The public is welcome to meet the artists at a free reception on Saturday February 9th from 6 – 8 p.m. This event is hosted by the Prince William County Alumnae Chapter Delta Sigma Theta Sorority at the Center for the Arts at 9419 Battle Street Old Town Manassas. 
  • Agape Love in Action needs volunteers to teach basic computer classes at the Manassas Senior Center on Tuesdays for 2 hours.  Please email Corliss for more info at: [email protected].
  • Virginia Cooperative Extension invites you to a number of free classes this month. The classes include: VHDA First Time Buyers workshop on Saturday 2/9 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. at Ferlazzo Center, Woodbridge. Small Business Workshop on 2/20 1 – 3 p.m. at Financial Empowerment Center, Woodbridge. And getting ready for taxes on 2/13 1 – 3 p.m. at Financial Empowerment Center and 2/21 7 – 9 p.m. at Ashton Ave offices.  Please call Joanne at (703) 792-5891 for more info.
  • Literacy Volunteers is gearing up for their next tutor training on March 2, and March 16th.  Come get all the tools and skills to help another with their literacy needs. Please call (703) 670-5702 to register.
  • The American Heart Association needs volunteers for their Heart’s Delight Wine Tasting & Auction event on March 6th, 8th and 9th in DC.  Please visit their website to register for specific shifts and locations at: heartsdelightwineauction.org
  • Novant Health/UVA Health System need volunteers to assist in the surgical services departments at both locations.  Tasks include taking care of patients, turning over rooms and restocking supplies. Shifts are Monday-Friday either 9 a.m. to noon or noon to 3 p.m.  There is also a need for volunteers in the thrift store and gift shops.   • The Quantico Creek Clean-up in partnership with the Town of Dumfries is Saturday February 23rd 9 a.m. to noon.  This is a great way to solve the plastic pollution in the creek.   • Serve our Willing Warriors is having their Annual Monte Carlo Night on Saturday February 23rd at the Regency Dominion Clubhouse.  This promises to great fun and for a great cause. Please visit their website at willingwarriors.org/events to purchase tickets and learn more. 
  • Volunteers are needed at The Catholic Charities Saint Lucy Food Distribution Hub in Manassas to help sort, package and perhaps deliver food items to local food pantries in the area in 40 lb. boxes.  Hours are Monday – Friday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Come help families in need.   • Virginia Cooperative Extension is having their Certified Master Financial Educator Volunteer Training on Wednesdays 1 – 4 p.m. starting March 6th – May 1st. Or Mondays 6:30 – 9:30 p.m. beginning April 29th – June 24th.  You will be fully trained to present credit & debit management, spending plans, cash management, identity theft, savings & investments personal financial coaching and more.   • Here’s a huge cheers to ACTS!   • The Tough Mudder is coming to Silver Lake in Haymarket on June 1st & 2nd.  This team oriented 8-10 mile obstacle course will have thousands of participants.   • The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program is looking for volunteers age 55+ to deliver noon meals through the Meals on Wheels Program.  Shifts are just 2-3 hours and available throughout the greater area. RSVP members receive a mileage reimbursement and additional insurance coverage at no cost to the volunteer.  Please call Jan at (571) 292-5307 to learn more.
  • Leesylvania State Park needs volunteers for their monthly shoreline cleanups to pick up trash and drift wood.  The work days are February 16th, March 23rd, April 13th and May 18th. Please register by calling the visitor center at (703) 583-6904 so they have your name to waive the entry fee of the park.
  • ACTS has a great way for you to celebrate spring by donating to their Prom Shop so more girls can enjoy that special day. They are collecting dresses, shoes, new make-up and accessories to share with the kids.  Please call Lydia at (703) 441-8606 ext. 249 to learn more.
  • The Greater Prince William Medical Reserve Corps needs both medical and non-medical volunteers to join their ranks.  These volunteers are trained to respond to public health emergencies as well as day to day activities. Prince William County government offices and facilities will be open on Wednesday, January 8, 2025. Still, employees can take unscheduled leave or engage in unscheduled telework due to current weather conditions.

While the county remains open for business, residents are encouraged to check for the latest updates on facility-specific operations by visiting pwcva.gov/emergency.

Several schools in our region have announced closures and delays for Wednesday, January 8, 2025, due to inclement weather and hazardous road conditions.

Fredericksburg Regional Transit (FXBGO!) announced that transit service, which was suspended on Tuesday due to winter weather, is expected to resume at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 8. Residents relying on public transportation are encouraged to plan accordingly and check for updates before traveling.

In addition to transit disruptions, the city’s trash collection schedule has been adjusted. Monday’s missed routes resumed today, and services will shift forward by one day for the remainder of the week. Tuesday’s trash will be collected on Wednesday, Wednesday’s on Thursday, and so on.

The City of Fredericksburg’s Public Works Department continues its efforts to clear snow and ice from roadways. Primary collector roads are reported to be in good condition, but some residential and collector roads remain compacted with snow and ice. Crews are applying plowing and chemical treatments as necessary to address these areas. As temperatures drop overnight, roads may refreeze, and drivers are urged to exercise caution when traveling.

The City also reminds property owners and occupants of their obligation to clear sidewalks adjacent to their properties. Snow and ice must be removed within 12 hours after snowfall ends, or by noon the following day if precipitation occurs overnight or on a Sunday. Sand or abrasives may be used if removal isn’t feasible. Residents and businesses are also responsible for clearing ADA access ramps to ensure safe pedestrian passage.
