City councilman says he’s made an offer to settle tax debt

MANASSAS — A Manassas City Councilman says he’s made an offer to the state to settle a federal tax lien claiming he owes nearly a quarter million dollars in back taxes.

New court documents dated Jan. 28, 2019 claim Councilman Mark D. Wolfe to be in arrears in $22,286 back property taxes owed to the city.

That’s on top of $234,930 in federal taxes court documents state that he owes. A federal tax lien has been filed against the city councilman for debts dating back to 2014

Wolfe said he made personal loans to his failed refrigeration business that he was unable to pay back. Afterward, he declared bankruptcy and lost his Manassas-based business and lost his home.

Wolfe told Potomac Local he’s made a settlement offer to the state which, he hopes will resolve the matter. He declined to provide specific details on the offer.

“We hope to have this resolved in the coming weeks,” Wolfe told Potomac Local.

Wolfe is serving the second of a four-year term on the city council. The Republican turned Democrat was first elected to the city council in 2008.
