Here’s a chance for college and high school students to be paired with mentors at CenterFuse

MANASSAS — Students will soon have the chance to partner with mentors from the region’s business community.

A “Shadow for a Day” event will marry high school and college students with professionals from a range of different occupations on May 8 at the CenterFuse co-working space in Manassas. Representatives from each of the more than 20 participating business and organizations will speak about their work for about two minutes each during a panel discussion, and then students will choose whom they want to shadow for a day.

The Shadow program will allow students to form a relationship with professionals for possible summer jobs, part-time jobs, internships, and letters of recommendation or as a mentor for future career plans,” organizer Theresa Coates Ellis states in an email, the organizer of the event. “The response from professionals and high school and college students has been very positive.”

Ellis, a Republican nominee for City Council, said she is organizing the event through her company Tackle Management, a public relations and marketing firm.

Participating students who attend the Shadow for a Day event will work with their perspective businesses to schedule a date for the student to come and shadow an employee of the company.

The Shadow for a Day event at CenterFuse will take place Tuesday, May 8, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

In addition to the Shadow event on May 8, two other optional workshops will be provided for students who want to hone their resume writing and interviewing skills.

Saturday, May 5, 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm: “Resume and Interview Tips,” for High School and College Students.

Tuesday, May 15, 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm: “Resume and Interview Tips,” for High School and College Students.

Participating companies have also been encouraged to screen student participants for possible summer jobs and internships. Students that want to participate in the event should RSVP by emailing Ellis.
