Miles seeks Dumfries Council seat on platform of inclusion

DUMFRIES — Selonia Miles has lived in Dumfries since she was 11 years old.

Her family moved to the town when her father was stationed at Quantico.
Now all grown up, the logistician that works for the Navy, and mother of a 13-year-old special needs child is making a run for the Dumfries Town Council. She’s seeking one of three open council seats in a May 1 General Election.

Miles is no stranger to town politics, as she’s served on the town’s Planning Commission overseeing applications for new development, as well as maintaining the town’s historic district complete with a handful of old homes that surrounds Dumfries Elementary School.

Being elected to the town council is the next logical step in her path toward public service, she said.

“Too often, we’re seen in an unflattering light,” said Miles. “But Dumfries can be a leading example of what a town should be in the commonwealth.”

Its close proximity to Quantico and access to area highways make it an ideal location for businesses to locate. Annual festivals in the spring and fall make the town an “ideal place to raise a family,” she adds.

Miles is also running on a platform of inclusion. Her autistic son is considered to be a level-three patient in need of very substantial support.
Her experiences raising him have helped her as a representative on the Prince William Special Education Advisory Board.

She says she is committed to providing children and adults activities to do in the town’s parks to keep them active.

Miles said she wants to conduct a survey of business owners in the town to get feedback on municipal services and to learn what more the town government could do to help grow their enterprises.

She praised outgoing Mayor Jerry Foreman for his communication skills employed while in office. She credited him for helping her understand the inner workings of the issues facing Dumfries residents.

A total of six people are vying for the three open council seats.

With Foreman not seeking re-election as Mayor, current town council members Cliff Brewer and Derrick Wood seek to replace him.

Should Virginia ditch the longstanding practice of electing the General Assembly and the governor in odd year elections?

The first odd year election in Virginia was in 1851, after a new state Constitution was approved and members of the House were elected to a two-year term. Before that, members of the House had one-year terms, and voters selected members every single year.

Now, Senate Majority Leader Scott Surovell says modern day voters are sick and tired of voting every year.

A Manassas man was sentenced today to 18 years in prison for providing drugs and alcohol to a child in exchange for sex acts and possession of child sexual abuse material (CSAM) depicting the same victim as well as other children.

According to court documents, Olajide Benjamin Ayilaran, 24, met a 14-year-old girl during the summer of 2023 and began communicating with the victim via iMessage. Between at least Nov. 21, 2023, and Feb. 29, 2024, Ayilaran met the victim nine times, usually in the morning before the victim went to school, to exchange the products for sexual acts. Ayilaran would wait for the victim in his car in a nearby park. When the victim arrived, he gave her the drugs and alcohol and then had the victim perform sex acts on him in the car.
