STAFFORD — Officials will take about three-tenths of an acre of land on Juggins Road in North Stafford ahead of the opening of a new Moncure Elementary School.
The Board of Supervisors voted on Tuesday to take the property after ongoing negotiations between the homeowners association on Juggins Road and county officials failed. Per the association’s bylaws, two-thirds of the homeowners needed to approve the take of the property, but that didn’t happen.
“They have no confidence in their ability to garner at two-thirds vote on this matter,” said Stafford County Griffs-Widewater District Supervisor Jack Cavalier. “They’ve used email, mail, and they’re just not getting a response from the property owners.”
Many of those property owners live out of town. Earlier this month, Cavalier asked for more time to work with the association to contact the owners rather than allowing the county to use “quick-take” powers to offer cash for the sliver of property.
In the end, however, that’s just what it will do by offering $2,436 for the property. The squired land will be used to widen narrow Juggins Road to accommodate school buses that will bring children to a new Moncure Elementary School which is being relocated from its current location on on Juggins Road near Route 610.
The new $36.6 million Moncure Elementary School is expected to open in May 2019, and will house about 900 students.
