WOODBRIDGE — The search for the site of a new $37 million parking garage officially begins.
The Prince William County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday authorized county Transportation Director Rick Canizales to use nearly $300,000 for a study that will determine the best site for the commuter garage.
The federal funds that will be distributed by the Virginia Department of Transportation to Prince William County are left over monies from a project to widen Route 1 in Triangle from four to six lanes, Canizales told the Board.
Three sites will be studied:
The property on which an “at home” store sits (once the site of a Kmart) in Dale City.
A piece of property on Telegraph Road near the OmniRide Transit Center in Woodbridge.
A portion of land at Stonebridge at Potomac Town Center in Woodbridge near the site of where a new Potomac Nationals Baseball Stadium would have been built had the deal not fell apart last year.
The garage that will be built was once attached to the stadium project but will now be built as a standalone structure for use by commuters. Officials aim to build the garage along the I-95 corridor in Woodbridge to make it easily accessible to the E-ZPass Express Lanes.
During the study, core samples of the soil will be taken from each of the three potential garage sites. When complete, a detailed analysis of each site, estimated cost of construction, and a concept plan for each site will be delivered to the Board of Supervisors so it may decide where it wants the garage built.
At nearly $400,000 per space, the new garage will make up a commuter parking deficit in eastern Prince William County that began in 2011 when Potomac Mills mall reduced the number of commuter parking spaces there from 1,000 to 250.
The Board of County Supervisors debated over whether or not to authorize Canizales to accept the funding.
“This is the dumbest use of taxpayers money in my time on this board… to use taxpayer money to look at three locations, I don’t get it, and I’m going to vote against it,” said Woodbridge District Supervisor Frank Principi.
Corey Stweart, Chairman, At-large, was swayed to vote for it after two of his fellow Board members — Supervisors Marty Nohe and Ruth Anderson — voiced the need for the study.
“Why do we need another study? It’s because studies tell you what you can afford to build,” said Nohe, who doubles as Chairman of the Northern Virginia Transportation Authority and the Virginia Railway Express Board of Commissioners.
“I know, I just hate studies,” said Stewart.
The Board approved funding six to one, with Principi voting against and Gainesville District Supervisor Peter Candland being absent from the meeting.
