Monika Christine Mattson, 81, of Gainesville, VA, passed away May 31st, 2017 at Betty’s Place, Inc. in Manassas, VA.
Born December 18, 1935 in Munich, Germany, she was the daughter of the late Nicholas and Ursula Henkel and step-daughter to Vera Henkel. On April 25th, 1967 at the National Cathedral, she married Jon Mattson, who survives.
Monika was a RN who attended nursing school in England and who immigrated to the United States in 1964. Along with her husband, they were long-time residents of both Manassas and Fredericksburg.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Ernest Henkel. Survivors include two daughters, Tina Thomas and her husband David of Gainesville; Karen McLaughlin and her husband Dustin of Woodbridge; two sisters, Kathrin Plants of Laurel, MD; Oliva Henkel of Germany; three brothers, Florian Henkel; Nicholas Henkel and Christian Henkel all of Germany; five grandchildren, Benjamin and Alexander Thomas; Tyler, Jase and Paige McLaughlin; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Graveside and interment services will be held on Wednesday, June 7, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at Quantico National Cemetery with Rev. Jim Johnson officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may take the form of a donation to Betty’s Place, Inc., 13656 Van Doren Rd, Manassas, VA 20112.
