Doris Dvorscak

Doris “Dorrie” M. Dvorscak, born in Jedburgh, Missouri on 4/11/26 to Fred and Estella Schwabe, peacefully passed from this life to eternal life with Jesus Christ on March 13, 2017. Dorrie spent her early years growing up on a farm with her brothers and sisters, Herman, Mabel, Carl and Leota. She often talked of going to a one room school house where she was such a good student she often was asked to help with math and reading to the older students.
After graduation, she moved to Washington, D.C., became a dance instructor and met a handsome Marine, named John who would dance his way into her heart and become her beloved husband. As a military wife she would travel to new places-her first stop being Japan. She often told the story of having to make her way from Washington D.C. to Washington State where she would board a navy ship to sail to Japan. Asking the Navy spouses how she would find her Marine Corps husband when the ship docked, they said “Don’t worry Honey; he will be the only one in khakis!”
After serving at several military posts, she and John made their home in Virginia where she would serve the Department of Agriculture for 27 years. Her work included writing legislation to develop the “W.I.C.” program which continues to provide care for pregnant women, nursing mothers and their children. She also developed programs to support Native American families in South Dakota and Montana. She received over fifty awards for these significant contributions. Also while living in Woodbridge, VA, she became a founding member of the Prince William Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. From Virginia she and John moved to Gilbert, Arizona, where they enjoyed the warmer desert climate, as well as the warmth of many cherished friendships. Her last move was with John to Somerby of Santa Rosa Beach, Florida.
Doris also loved to travel, both in and out of the USA. Highlights of these trips included a visit to Neuschwanstein Castle in Germany, climbing the Alps in Switzerland, riding elephants in Thailand and eating lamb dogs in Iceland!
Her greatest love, next to her husband, were her five children, Debi Burns (married to Kevin), Peter (married to Karen), John, Paul and Kimmy Nine (married to Jerry); her 5 grandchildren Trip Nine (married to Chrissy), Kelly Nine, Chet Nine, Kathryn Russell (married to Michael), and Ryan Burns; and her 3 great grandchildren Daniel and Marya Nine, and Sophia Grace Russell. Her favorite words of blessing to her family were “I love you with my whole heart and soul.” She did that well. After 65 years of marriage John still called her “his bride” and her granddaughter, Kathryn, described her as “a gentle, compassionate woman with a heart of gold.” This is a perfect testimony to a truly great woman.
Final arrangements have been made by Heritage Gardens, Niceville, Florida and Mountcastle Turch Funeral Home in Woodbridge, VA where a visitation will be held Monday, March 20, from 2-4 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be said by Father Frances Peffley at our Lady of Angels Catholic Church also in Woodbridge. Immediately following she will be laid to rest at Stonewall Memory Gardens, in Manassas, VA, next to her sons, John and Paul. Donations may be made to Emerald Coast Hospice in Miramar Beach, FL who lovingly cared for her in her last days.

Fredericksburg celebrated the grand opening of its new Visitor Center on January 10, 2025, with an open-house event that drew hundreds today at the newly renamed City Center government building, formerly known as the Executive Plaza. Community members gathered at 601 Caroline Street to explore the revamped space, enjoy light refreshments, and learn about the Visitor Center’s offerings.

The new facility, described as brighter and more accessible, provides an inviting hub for showcasing Fredericksburg’s artists and businesses. “The center is fabulous,” said Mayor Kerry Devine. “It has space for showcasing our artists and businesses, and we’re just so excited to welcome people to this new center.”

Rita McClenney, President and CEO of the Virginia Tourism Corporation, emphasized the importance of the Visitor Center as a resource for wayfinding and discovering unique experiences in Fredericksburg. “A lot of people research before they travel, but there’s nothing like being on the ground and finding out about a place through the people who know it best,” said McClenney.
