Long time Woodbridge resident Walter John Schwenger is at rest. Walter was born in New York on May 31, 1938 to the late Ernest and Elsie Schwenger. He passed away on Monday, March 13, 2017. Walter grew up in Brooklyn, New York and moved to the area when he was in the Navy. He met his wife, Socia Patricia “Pat” Hegie on a blind date in Washington DC and married her a little over a year later on January 11, 1959. They then moved to their house in Woodbridge, VA and have been there ever since. Both Walter and Pat were very independent people who managed to share their lives with one another for 58 years. Pat says their individual independence and then dependence on one another was what made their marriage work for so long.
After his stint in the military Walter went to work with Allied Fuel Service at National Airport. After that he went to work for the phone company and when they went on strike he became an officer with the City of Alexandria Police Department. After about a year with the City of Alexandria he went to work with Washington DC Capitol Police where he retired after working from 1968 until 1992. He retired with the rank of Sargent.
Walter and Pat have three sons, Walter (Vetra), William (Vicky) and Wilbur (Laura). All survive him as do his 9 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. His boys grew up doing all the fun things boys like to do including going fishing with their dad. Fishing was one of Walter’s favorite things to do. Walter was a member of the Masonic Lodge but was not able to attend many events in the past year due to his declining health.
Walter was a very loved man. His family and friends will hold their memories close.
A celebration of Walter’s life will take place at Mountcastle Turch Funeral Home, 13318 Occoquan Road in Woodbridge, VA 22191 on Saturday, March 18, 2017 starting at 1 PM and going until 3 PM. Please stop by and share your memories of Walter with his family.

Community members gathered at 601 Caroline Street to explore the revamped space, enjoy light refreshments, and learn about the Visitor Center’s offerings.
The new facility, described as brighter and more accessible, provides an inviting hub for showcasing Fredericksburg’s artists and businesses. “The center is fabulous,” said Mayor Kerry Devine. “It has space for showcasing our artists and businesses, and we’re just so excited to welcome people to this new center.”
