Police across the region this past weekend participated in National Drug Take Back Day.Â

Manassas City Police participated once again along with numerous law enforcement agencies in the Twelfth National Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Drug Take Back Event.
Manassas City Police and volunteers from the Prince William County Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association and the community at large collected 451 pounds from citizens who brought their expired and unused prescription medications to Novant Health UVA Health Prince William Medical Center on Sudley Rd. The amount collected at the Manassas City site was larger than that at any other single collection site in Virginia State Police Division 7 this fall.

From Manassas Park police:Â
Manassas Park Police Department dropped off 22 pounds and had one volunteer. Â Additionally, we have a permanent disposal drop box in our vestibule at 329 Manassas Drive.
In Stafford County, volunteers collected 770 pounds of prescription medications.

A total of 1,247.3 pounds of expired or unused prescription medications were collected in greater Prince William County on Saturday, October 22nd, as the Crime Prevention Unit of the Prince William County Police Department, the City of Manassas Police Department, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Novant Health UVA Health System Prince William Medical Center, Sentara Lake Ridge Ambulatory Care Center, and Novant Health UVA Health System Haymarket Medical Center hosted the DEA’s “Take Back” initiative.

Novant Health UVA Health System Prince William Medical Center – 451 lbs.
Sentara Lake Ridge Ambulatory Care Center – 440 lbs.
Novant Health UVA Health System Haymarket Medical Center – 356.3 lbs.The nationwide prescription drug “Take-Back” initiative seeks to prevent pill abuse and theft. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet.
The partner agencies involved wish to thank the public for their participation in continuing to keep our communities safe and healthy. By turning in these unwanted prescription drugs – rather than throwing them away or flushing them down a sink or toilet – they are kept out of the landfill and the water supply.
