Harley to BMW? Police test 4 new motorcycles, explore potential cost savings

Some Prince William police officers are changing up their rides.

From Prince William police:

SWITCHING GEARS: Our Motor Unit is testing 4 BMW motorcycles as we consider transitioning from our long-time Harley Davidsons as a cost saving measure for the police department. Price comparisons for the initial cost are lower and maintenance cost comparisons will be reviewed upon completion of the first year. #ShareTheRoad

Each Prince William police officer in the traffic unit, also known as the motor unit, is issued a motorcycle, Today, the department uses 19 Harley-Davidson motorcycles.

The department is exploring just how much money it could save in maintenance costs with these new motorcycles.

Here’s more from Prince William police spokesman Jonathan Perok:

“Cost savings are not known right now. Price comparisons for the initial cost appear to be lower but overall maintenance, which is the bigger cost, is not known right now.”

“The 4 BMW’s that we have are only being tested and may be incorporated into the fleet if we find they meet our needs and can set up something for future, long-term maintenance.”

“No decision has been made to switch and we don’t know when that will be right now. We need to be able to determine through testing and maintenance that this is a better fit for us.”

Multiple police departments across the U.S. use BMW motorcycles, he added.
