Road construction at the intersection of Route 28, Linton Hall, and Vint Hill roads is about to ramp up.
Prince William County Transportation officials announced a $60 million “umbrella” contract to widen a two-mile portion of Route 28 from Aden Road to Fitzwater Drive in Nokesville from two to four lanes, widen about a half-mile portion of Route 28 between Linton Hall Road to Pennsylvania Avenue (just south of the Manassas City line) from four to six lanes.
The third and final portion of the project to widen Vint Hill Road from two to four lanes from Sudley Manor Drive to abotu Shaffer Lane. This “Vint Hill Road Extended” project will connect the newly widened road with a relocated Vint Hill Road, which connects to Route 28 about a half-mile south of its current congested intersection with Route 28, Linton Hall, Chapel Springs, and Bristow roads.
Work to widen Route 28 between Aden Road and Fitzwater Drive, and work on Vint Hill Road Extended will take place all at once, said Prince William County Transportation Department Director Tom Blaser. It is expected to be complete by November and December 2018, respectively. Work to widen Route 28 between Linton Hall Road and Pennsylvania Avenue will be complete in May 2020.
“We have a lot of economies of scale working in our favor here, we’ll have better unit prices, the staff efficiencies greater, and we’ll have better control of traffic and lane closures during construction,” he added.
The new roadwork will be paid for with proffers from developers, and new funds from the Northern Virginia Transportation Authority.
Work underway now to widen and relocate a portion of Vint Hill Road about a half-mile south of its current intersection with Route 28, and widen a portion of Route 28 between what will become Old Vint Hill Road and new Vint Hill Road is expected to be complete by Memorial Day.
