A house exploded in Woodbridge Sunday afternoon after a gas leak, according to fire and rescue officials.
OWL Volunteer Fire Department crews were called to the 14000 block of Franklin Street and West Longview Drive at 3:03 p.m. for a report of a gas leak that appeared to be outside of the house.
Crews arrived and found the smell of gas inside the home, and upgraded the call to an “inside gas leak.” High levels of gas were found inside the house, according to OWL Volunteer Fire Department spokeswoman Rebecca Barnes.
As firefighters exited the home, an explosion erupted creating a fireball that ripped through the basement. Windows inside the home were blown out, Barnes added.
Afterward, a fire in the utility room was extinguished. No one was injured, and area homes were checked for gas levels, said Barnes.
Crews from Washington Gas were called to the investigate, said Barnes. A Fire Marshal from the Prince William County Fire and Rescue Department was also called to the scene.
The incident remains under investigation.
