Sherwood murder trial continued until June 20

The murder case against John Sherwood has been continued until June 20.

Sherwood is accused of killing his 21-year-old wife Erica Renae Sherwood in a violent incident at home in Dale City on New Year’s Day 2015. A witness told a court last year Sherwood was trying to escape from her husband and took refuge at her friends house where she would be killed.

John Sherwood came to the house where his wife and son were staying on New Years Eve. The couple got into a fight where Sherwood accused is wife of cheating on him, cornered her in a bathtub, and slit her throat, according to a witness who testified in court.

The case was set to go to trial January 4 but was continued until June 20.

“We are prepared to present a thorough case,” said Jennifer Zary, Sherwood’s attorney, who declined to say why the case was continued.

Prince William Commonwealth Attorney Paul Ebert did not return a request for comment on this story.

Sherwood lived in Triangle at the time of her death. She was staying at a home in the 15100 block of Concord Drive in Dale City for two days prior to her death.

Police were called to the home at 1:33 a.m. Jan 1, 2015 to investigate a reported stabbing. Authorities found John Sherwood’s car crashed into a tree just off nearby Cloverdale Road, according to a police report.

A Virginia State Trooper later found Sherwood walking along Interstate 95. Sherwood fled from the trooper and a helicopter, and K9 units were called in arrest the suspect on Neabsco Mills Road, according to the report.

A Go-Fund-Me page was set up in Erica Sherwood’s honor by her family shortly after her death. To date, the page has collected over $2,000 in donations.

Her death is a tragedy due to domestic violence, her family penned on the fundraising website.
