When was the last time you saw George Washington take a drink?
Come to think of it, we had never seen our first president kick back a cold one. Not even a re-enactor.
But that’s OK.
On Sept. 12 in Dumfries, they were putting down pints revolutionary style. It was “Tavern Night” at Williams Ordinary — one of the oldest buildings in Prince William County, a place actually used as a tavern during colonial times.
While old George didn’t have a drink on Tavern Night, the real George Washington most likely rode by the place during his travels through Virginia.
Tavern Night was a first of its kind for the Prince William County Historic Preservation Division. The drew local residents to Williams Ordinary for a bit of history and fun. Historic Preservation turned to Potomac Local for marketing assistance for the event.
We were happy to help turn Tavern Night into a sold-out event.
“The day our ad went up on Potomac Local, our phone began to ring almost within the hour. When we talked to people on Saturday night to see where they heard about it, a majority said the either read the article in Potomac Local or saw the ad on the website,” said Robert Orrison, with the Prince William County Historic Preservation Division. “We really appreciate all the help you provided to get the word out for our event.”

Ads for Tavern Night appeared on every page of Potomac Local, and a promoted post appeared in our news section. It was a great mix of local advertising and content marketing.
We look forward to the next Tavern Night. And we wonder if old George Washington ever drank some of Sam Adams’ beer.

Phil was welcomed with chants of “Phil, Phil, Phil,” and pulled from a hatch on his tree stump shortly after sunrise before a member of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club read from a scroll in which he boasted: “Only I know — you can’t trust A.I.”
At approximately 2:45 P.M. on Saturday, February 1st, units with Stafford County Fire and Rescue (SCFR) responded to a reported structure fire in the 100 block of Aquia Creek Road, near Aquia Creek. Callers reported a neighboring residence on fire, and first arriving units marked the scene less than 10 minutes later and confirmed fire and smoke coming from the rear and roof of a single-family residence.
Due to a lack of hydrants in the area, crews had to utilize rural water operations to shuttle water to the scene. Crews worked quickly to extinguish the fire and bring it under control in approximately an hour, despite the roof collapsing.
The residence was not occupied at the time of the fire, and no injuries were reported. The fire is under routine investigation by the Stafford County Fire Marshal’s Office. SCFR units were assisted on scene by Quantico Fire and Emergency Services.
(AP) — Preliminary data from the deadliest U.S. aviation accident in nearly 25 years showed conflicting readings about the altitudes of an airliner and Army helicopter when they collided near Reagan National Airport in Washington, killing everyone aboard both aircraft, investigators said Saturday.
