Prince William GOP completes back-to-school community project

During the month of August, the Prince William Republican Committee conducted a
back-to-school supply drive to benefit some of the County’s neediest students. The Committee collected
enough supplies to fill 10 large boxes, and delivered them to Occoquan Elementary School and Rippon Middle
School.

Items collected included backpacks, pens, no. 2 pencils, water-based markers, glue sticks, three-ring binders,
pocket folders, and loose-leaf notebook paper. Community service has been a focus for the Prince William
GOP this year, and this project was the Committee’s latest activity. Any Prince William County resident can
participate in the Committee’s Community Service Initiative no matter what their political affiliation is.
Last year, the Committee collected 9 large boxes of school supplies and delivered them to Vaughn Elementary
School and Fred Lynn Middle School, both Title I schools.

“I’m glad we were able to help a few families start off the school year with the supplies they need to succeed,”
said GOP Chairman Bill Card. “This project is a great way for us to support education, because these students
will be Prince William’s leaders of tomorrow. It is also exciting to see the innovative teaching strategies being
put into place in our local schools, especially what’s happening at Occoquan Elementary School under Hamish
Brewer’s leadership.”

“Prince William County is a diverse community, not just demographically but also socioeconomically,” said
Safe Schools Advisory Council Chairman Tim Singstock. “Thankfully, we have business and civic organizations,
the Prince William GOP being just one of them, who are willing to step forward and help level the playing field
for our economically disadvantaged kids. I was honored to be a part of this effort and inspired to see the ‘no
excuses education’ model at work in Occoquan Elementary School.”

Prince William Republicans kicked off this year’s Community Service Initiative in March with a fashion show
and luncheon to benefit the B.A.R.N Transitional Housing charity in Bristow. The Bull Run Republican Women’s
Club led the effort to raise money and collect clothes for women being served at the charity. Republicans have
also conducted food bank drives and clean-up projects across the County this year. In 2014, the Committee
Initiative included ten service projects, including food bank collections, events to support veterans, and an
August school supply drive, among many others.

A debate over financial transparency and fiscal responsibility erupted during the Prince William Board of County Supervisors’ meeting as members weighed the transfer of $31.6 million to Prince William County Schools (PWCS). The funds, representing the school division’s share of the Fiscal Year 2024 general revenue surplus, were allocated under the county’s long-standing revenue-sharing agreement.

While the measure ultimately passed, some supervisors raised concerns that the county’s revenue-sharing model does not adequately oversee how the school system spends taxpayer money.
