How to prepare your medical records for EMR migration

With technology expanding into all industries, the medical industry is no exception. More and more, healthcare professionals have begun to transfer their data and patient’s medical records to digital formats.

There are several benefits to transferring over to an Electronic Medical Records (EMR) system. Overall this is increased safety, as opposed to paper records, reduced errors, and it also makes it easy for healthcare providers to share information and collaborate on a patient’s case or needs. Additionally, it’s more efficient for your entire office to use one online system, rather than copies of paper records.

But when you are getting ready to take the plunge with EMR migration at your facility, you need to make sure that you’re prepared. Ensuring that all of your patient’s medical records are HIPAA compliant in the new system – and protected from hacks – are all things one needs to consider when selecting an EMR program.

If you hand off your records to any EMR program, you may end up in a situation where data is lost or breached. This can be a huge ordeal for your medical practice, especially when you have to notify all of your patients to tell them there’s been an issue.

One way to avoid this hassle is to allow a technology solutions company, like JTC, Inc. to come in and install the EMR system, and migrate the servers so that the transition is smoother.

“A lot of times what happens for doctors, when they are going to have to upgrade their EMR software – which they all have to do…a lot of times these doctors are not [sure] how servers work,” said JTC, Inc. spokeswoman Kristen Maxey.

JTC, Inc. has worked with AllScripts – an EMR provider – for several years, and has demonstrated experience with server migrations and prep work related to EMR deployments.

“We have the experience of working with the EMR providers, prepping the server to their standards and getting everything ready so it can be handed off to the EMR so they can do the migration,” said Maxey.

Because JTC, Inc. is a Dell reseller, they can even sell healthcare providers hardware for the EMR migration at a discounted rate.

Additionally, JTC, Inc. is going to being there every step of the way as the server is prepped and installed so that your healthcare organization can move forward with a new EMR system.

The Virginia House of Delegates Subcommittee of the Cities, Counties, and Towns Committee rejected a bill that sought to regulate the siting of data centers near schools, parks, and residential areas. Delegate Ian Lovejoy (R-22, Prince William County) presented HB1984, which would have required local government approval for data center developments only if they were located at least a quarter mile away from such properties. The subcommittee voted 8-0 to “lay the bill on the table,” effectively killing it.

The vote dealt a setback to those advocating for tighter regulation of Virginia’s rapidly growing data center industry. Data centers, which house servers and infrastructure critical for cloud computing and internet services, have been a source of contention due to their noise, construction impacts, and potential encroachment on residential and community spaces.
