Gas main replacement underway in Manassas

Updated Aug. 11

The new gas main should be in place by the end of the month. Here’s more from Columbia Gas spokesman Robert Innes:

Columbia Gas of Virginia is replacing 780′ of 4″plastic gas main on Portner Av between West St and Main St. in collaboration with the City of Manassas new storm and water project. There are four Columbia Gas of Virginia customer service lines in the 9200 and 9300 blocks of Portner Avenue which are involved in this project. Each customer will be notified in advance of the need to transfer the existing service line to the new natural gas main. The customer will be temporarily without service as we complete this work. This transfer should take a couple of hours. When the service line is transferred to the new natural gas main, Columbia Gas technicians will perform a safety check and relight the customer’s natural gas equipment. The project is expected to be completed by the end of August.

Crews are working to replace a gas main on Portner Avenue in Manassas.

The new pipes are made of anti-corrosive materials, Manassas spokeswoman Patty Prince stated in an email.
Columbia Gas is overseeing the installation, we’re told. We’re awaiting more information about how long this project will take and how many customers will be affected.

Manassas police drivers would expect a portion of Portner Avenue in this residential section of Manassas to be closed today.
