5:40 p.m. New information

A woman was taken to Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center for smoke inhalation today.

The victim is believed to be a teacher at C.D. Hylton High School in Woodbridge. The fire broke out on the school’s roof about four p.m. Tuesday.

The victim and other school employees were inside the building preparing for the coming school year.
Outside, contractors were putting the final touches on summertime renovations and repairs to the school. They had been working on the roof.

Fire crews found smoke in a 2nd-floor hallway of the two-story school when they arrived. They suspected an air handling had malfunctioned.

After talking with contractors who had been working on the building, fire crews learned some construction materials had caught fire and were smoldering, said Prince William fire and rescue spokesman Thomas Jarman.

The building was evacuated and crews doused the blaze. When it was out, crews inspected the damage on the roof and the water damage to classrooms on the 2nd floor.

Other firefighters took a respite from the hot weather and sat under a shade tree where they cooled off with wet towels and bottled water.

Two fire marshals arrived at the scene to investigate the cause of the fire, which has yet to be determined.
Students are scheduled to return to the building for the first day of the upcoming school year Aug. 31.
