Potomac Health Foundation awards grants to improve community health

Potomac Health Foundation awarded grants to 36 programs serving residents of eastern Prince William County, Lorton, and North Stafford communities through its Howard L. Greenhouse Large Grant Program.

The Howard L. Greenhouse Large Grant Program addresses the Foundation’s mission to improve the health of the community by awarding grants to programs that strengthen access to primary health care for medically underserved residents, reduce the impact of preventable illness and disease, and support innovation around emerging health needs.

In total, the Foundation Board of Directors awarded a total of $3,946,711 in grants. Grant amounts ranged from $16,148 to $250,000 and were awarded through a competitive application process.

Grants are awarded for up to three years on an annual basis, contingent on performance. Of the 36 grants awarded, 22 are first year grants; the remaining 14 programs are receiving grants for the second or third year. Seven agencies are receiving grants for the first time from the Foundation.

Dr. Carol Shapiro, Chair of the Foundation’s Grant and Solicitation Approval Committee, said “We are excited about these programs. They address pressing health needs and will make a major impact in the community.”

Among the first time recipients are: The Farmers Market.co to provide SNAP Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) access and nutrition incentives at Dale City Farmers Market to encourage low-income families to make healthier food choices, Pathway Homes to help formerly chronically homeless individuals living with mental illness stay housed and live more productive lives in the community, and Young Invincibles to enroll and educate young adults about health coverage options.

Potomac Health Foundation is an independent, private foundation whose mission is to improve the health of the community. It serves the communities of eastern Prince William County, north Stafford County and Lorton.

The City of Fredericksburg’s Public Works Department continues its efforts to clear snow and ice from roadways. Crews are applying plowing and chemical treatments as necessary to address these areas. As temperatures drop overnight, roads may refreeze, and drivers are urged to exercise caution when traveling.

The City also reminds property owners and occupants of their obligation to clear sidewalks adjacent to their properties. Snow and ice must be removed within 12 hours after snowfall ends, or by noon the following day if precipitation occurs overnight or on a Sunday. Sand or abrasives may be used if removal isn’t feasible. Residents and businesses are also responsible for clearing ADA access ramps to ensure safe pedestrian passage.
