In the afternoon on June 7, Prince William fire and rescue arrived on the scene of a single family split-level home that caught fire on Spruce Street in Yorkshire.
Prince William fire and rescue stated that the fire began on the back deck and had spread to the siding and roof of the home.
Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire, and no one was injured.
The Red Cross was on scene to assist 3 adults that have been displaced by the fire, said Prince William fire and rescue.
The Fire Marshal’s Office said that preliminary damages are estimated at $175,000 and the fire began on the deck after an accidental improper disposal of smoking materials. The home has been deemed unsafe.
More from Prince William fire and rescue: Â
If you smoke, smoke outside.
Provide an area for individuals to properly extinguish and safely discard smoking materials. Â
Do not discard butts or ashes into mulch laden landscapes, flower beds, grassy areas, woods, etc. Â Before you throw out butts and ashes, douse in water or sand.
Use deep, wide, sturdy ashtrays on a sturdy foundation, e.g. table.
Check under furniture cushions and in other places people smoke for cigarette butts that may have fallen out of sight. Â
Be alert when smoking! You won’t be alert if you’re sleepy, have been drinking, or have taken medicine or other drugs.Â
Never smoke in a home where medical oxygen is used.
If you smoke, choose fire-safe cigarettes (www.firesafecigarettes.org/); they are less likely to cause fires. Â
Keep matches and lighters out of sight and reach of children.
