New Chief Executive Officer for ACTS

After the completion of a national search, Action in Community Through Service’s (ACTS) Board President Craig Gerhart has announced the appointment of Steven G. Liga as the new Chief Executive Officer of ACTS. “Mr. Liga will provide ACTS with the leadership it needs to build upon its 45-year legacy of serving the community, ensuring it is here for those in need for years to come.” 

Mr. Liga joins ACTS full time on March 30th, bringing over 22 years of experience in the Human Services Field. He is currently the CEO & Executive Director of the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (NCADD) of Middlesex County, Inc., a nonprofit public health agency in New Jersey dedicated to reducing the impact of substance abuse and related problems in local communities.

Mr. Liga also teaches at Rutgers University for the Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy, where he has developed a number of undergraduate and graduate courses. A passionate advocate, Mr. Liga has collaborated with elected officials on multiple pieces of legislation, including New Jersey’s 911 Lifeline and Overdose Prevention Acts. He has served on numerous professional and governmental committees and task forces and is an in-demand conference speaker. He has also served as President of several nonprofit boards and provides strategic planning services to others. 

Mr. Liga has a Masters in Social Work from Rutgers University and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Villanova University. He is a Licensed Clinical Alcohol and Drug Counselor, Licensed Social Worker, Certified Clinical Supervisor and Certified Prevention Specialist.

Mr. Liga is excited to be moving to Prince William County, where he can return to his roots serving those most in need and be near his family here in Virginia and Maryland. He is looking forward to working with the ACTS Board and Staff to help the organization continue to grow and thrive, while always maintaining an environment that respects human dignity and serves the community with integrity, compassion, confidentiality and professionalism.

Mr. Liga shared with ACTS staff “I am honored to accept this position with ACTS. Its legacy of helping those who are too often invisible to society is truly inspiring.” He continued, “The sheer number of volunteers who support ACTS everyday is testament to its good work. I can’t wait to get started.”

Stafford County Public Schools will host the inaugural Career GPS: Guiding Pathways to Success Expo on April 23, 2025, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Stafford Regional Airport.

The event is designed to introduce approximately 2,500 sixth-grade students to various career pathways through hands-on learning opportunities, interactive exhibits, and connections with local professionals and businesses. The expo aims to help students begin planning for high school and their future careers by exposing them to various industries.

Director of Career and Technical Education Stephanie Carter emphasized that Career GPS is more than just a field trip. It calls it an opportunity for students to explore possibilities, make informed decisions, and gain confidence in selecting pathways that align with their interests. The event will feature interactive exhibits showcasing different career fields, high school student ambassadors who will share insights into academic programs, and opportunities for students to engage with industry professionals.

Fredericksburg City Public Schools (FCPS) students and staff were honored at the Virginia General Assembly for their work on the FCPS Youth Mental Health Taskforce. The delegation, invited by State Senator Tara Durant, spent the day in Richmond serving as legislators and meeting with state officials.

The students arrived at the Virginia General Assembly Building at 9:45 a.m. January 29, 2025, where they met with Senator Durant before touring the historic Capitol. They then participated in a Q&A session with legislators, discussing the importance of youth mental health initiatives.

Northern Virginia Electric Cooperative (NOVEC) is accepting applications for its college scholarship program. High school seniors whose families receive NOVEC service in Fairfax, Fauquier, Loudoun, Prince William, and Stafford counties, as well as the City of Manassas Park, are eligible to apply.
