He made us laugh, and now he makes us think.
William Arden (Tony) Anthony, 76, of Spotsylvania County passed away Tuesday, December 30, 2014 at Mary Washington Hospital.
In his early life, he drifted through the Titusville District School System, finally graduating, to his mother’s great relief, from Colestock Sr High School in June of 1956.
Tony was a Navy Veteran of the Vietnam War having served from 1956 to 1975. He attained the rank of Chief Petty Officer.
Besides his wife, Tony found the greatest joys in reading, being the best father and grandfather, bargain shopping for “As Seen on TV” items, music, political banter, and sports. Tony enjoyed and coached volleyball and soccer. He was an avid golfer, until he came to the realization that his scooter was not as fast as those electric golf carts – it was hard to finish a round while letting everyone play-through. He often shared his survivalist ideas with family and provided them with many survivalist tools; unfortunately, he felt it necessary to demonstrate his fool-proof “bug out” plan.
He liked his coffee – black. He liked to make “runs to the border” for his tacos and make stops at a Texas Roadhouse for prime rib. He LOVED his single malt scotch.
Tony had a joke for every situation and often jumped into conversations with a random joke. He loved to tell stories. And you could be sure 50% of every story was true – you just never knew which 50%.
Tony was preceded in death by his mother, Mildred (Wishart) Anthony, in 1962, his father, Prentiss Anthony, in 1979, and his appendix, in 1981.
He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Elizabeth Anthony; son Christopher Lee Anthony; daughter, Leigh Arden Cruz; four grandchildren, Hunter, Ryder and Pieper Anthony and Mia Cruz; and his best friend, Toby, a Rat Terrier.
A service will be held on Friday, 23 January 2015 at the U.S. Marine Memorial Chapel, 3251 Embry Loop, Quantico, VA 22134 aboard Marine Corps Base Quantico at 11:30am. Interment with honors will follow at Quantico National Cemetery, 18424 Joplin Road, Triangle, VA at 1:00pm.
A celebration of life luncheon will follow the interment at The Globe & Laurel Restaurant, 3987 Jefferson Davis Hwy, Stafford, VA 22554 at 2:00pm.
