WOODBRIDGE, Va. — The “Way to Well Health Tour” stopped by the grand opening of a new Walgreens Pharmacy in Woodbridge on Monday.
The health tour featured a bus with staff offering free health screenings for cholesterol, glucose, blood pressure, and healthy weight. The event drew hundreds to the store’s parking lot at Marumsco Plaza.
“Normally we see about 70 people, but today we’ve already processed 145 and it’s only three o’clock,” said Francisco Trujillo, a manager for the health tour.
The bus can process about 25 people per hour, makes frequent stops in the Washington, D.C. area and is headed next to Delaware, and is sponsored by the National Urban League.
People also came to Walgreens yesterday for free flu shots being offered as part of the grand opening festivities.
“It’s nice that families who have less money can come and get free flu shots,” said Beyra, 15, of Woodbridge, who came with her siblings and mother.
There were also health demonstrations, and tips on how to live healthier. Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center set up a booth to show soda lovers just how much sugar is actually in each bottled drink. For sugary sodas bottles, 20 packets of sugar lay on a display table in a plastic bag next to the bottle. There were fewer next to sports drink bottles, and Sentara says it’s OK to have a few of these drinks from time to time the best drink is old-fashioned water.
The new Walgreens makes up a revitalized Marumsco Plaza on U.S. 1 in Woodbridge. It now joins a new Pollo Campero restaurant and a newly relocated BB&T Bank at the shopping center. Another Walgreens is planned to be built further south on U.S. 1 near Dumfries, according to store officials.
