Dumfries Mulls Discount Card

DUMFRIES, Va. — If you had a card that would allow you discount at local businesses, would you use it?

That’s what Dumfries officials want to know, and they’ve asked the town’s business association to solicit feedback from business owners to see if they would like to be listed on such a card that could be used at merchants in the small town.

If created, the discount card — which was included on a vision plan on what Dumfries would look like in 2020 — would be able to be presented for markdowns at several businesses in Dumfries.

Only businesses in the town could be listed on the cards and, because the town would offer to pay for the creation of the cards, they would only be made available to town residents.

“We want to see if there is enough interest for a card, and then we will proceed on how to do it,” said Town Manager Daniel Taber.

For the card to work, about 15 to 20 businesses would have to agree to offer discounts for card users for the initiative to be successful, added Taber. At least one computer services company, Caldwell Consultants, has expressed interest in offering a discount for card users.

The cards would be printed on a machine at the town’s police department currently used to make official ID badges. If officials decide to produce a card, Taber estimates 250 to 300 people would want one, and that they could be printed for $1 per card.

The Dumfries Business Association has asked businesses who would like to participate in a discount card program to email the Town Manager.
