MANASSAS, Va. – The House of Mercy, a nonprofit humanitarian organization, will hold free classes beginning Thursday, Sept. 12, to help those interested to prepare for the math portion of the GED exam.
Classes will be held from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. each Thursday over three months, according to House of Mercy Assistant Director Ann Cimini. Those who wish to take the course can register now at House of Mercy, located at 8170 Flannery Court in Manassas.
Registration will also be accepted on the first day of class. Class enrollment is closed after the second class, Sept. 19, Cimini said.
The course covers mathematics principles tested on the GED exam, she said. “You’ll also learn how the exam is set up. Each class builds knowledge based on material covered in the previous class,” she said.
A certified instructor will teach the course, which will include GED Testing Service course materials and books that can also be purchased, Cimini said. The GED Testing Service is a joint initiative of Pearson, the world’s leading learning company, and the American Council on Education.
GED (General Educational Development) tests are a group of five subject tests which, when passed, certify that the taker has high school-level academic skills. The test measures proficiency in science, mathematics, social studies, reading and writing.
Passing the GED test gives those who did not complete high school the opportunity to earn their high school equivalency credential.
